Important: This guide is educational orientation only. It is not legal, immigration or regulator advice. Always verify requirements on AHPRA, the relevant National Board and assessment council before booking a test or paying a fee.

AHPRA English language standard at a glance

All four professions in this guide use the AHPRA English Language Skills registration standard. The PDF highlights a 2026 score transition, so your test date matters.

On or before 22 April 2026

OET minimums listed in the guide: Listening B, Reading B, Writing C+ and Speaking B. The writing minimum was lowered from B to C+ on 18 March 2025.

On or after 23 April 2026

OET numerical minimums listed in the guide: Listening 350, Reading 360, Writing 350 and Speaking 360.

Test-centre rule

AHPRA accepts paper or computer OET taken at an OET test centre. The guide notes that at-home OET is not accepted by AHPRA.

Two sittings rule

AHPRA can accept a maximum of two test sittings within 12 months, with all four sub-tests taken at each sitting.

Before booking: AHPRA also accepts IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge tests under specific rules. Verify the current standard and your National Board page before paying for any test.
Medical Board + AMC

Doctors: Medical Board and AMC pathway

For IMGs with a recognised primary medical qualification listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. The main routes are Standard Pathway, Competent Authority Pathway and Specialist Pathway.

StepWhat to prepare
1Confirm your medical school is acceptable to AMC for your graduation year.
2Create an AMC account and establish your AMC portfolio.
3Complete Primary Source Verification through ECFMG EPIC / MyIntealth.
4Meet the AHPRA English Language Skills standard with OET Medicine or another approved test.
5For Standard Pathway, pass AMC CAT MCQ, then AMC Clinical Exam or an AMC-accredited WBA.
6Apply through AHPRA for limited or provisional registration and complete 12 months / minimum 47 weeks FTE supervised practice.
7For Competent Authority Pathway, confirm category A to F eligibility, secure supervised employment and complete the supervised practice route to general registration.

OET preparation focus

  • Writing: referral, discharge and transfer letters with selective relevance and Australian clinical register.
  • Speaking: chronic disease, bad news, shared decision making, patient concerns and Indigenous health considerations.
  • Reading: clinical guidelines, drug information and workplace texts.

  • Forgetting to release OET scores to AMC / Medical Board in the myOET portal.
NMBA + AHPRA

2If referred, pay the assessment fee and submit documents and portfolio.
3Complete Orientation Part 1 and receive the OBA referral letter if eligible.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers for Australia pathway candidates planning OET and registration.

Is OET accepted for Australia healthcare registration?

OET is accepted across the AHPRA professions covered here, but the exact score table depends on test date and National Board rules. Verify the current AHPRA standard before booking.

What changed in 2026 for AHPRA English scores?

The guide notes a score transition from 23 April 2026. Tests on or before 22 April 2026 follow the previous grade table; tests on or after 23 April 2026 use numerical OET scores.

Can I combine two OET sittings for AHPRA?

AHPRA can accept a maximum of two sittings within a 12-month period when each sitting includes all four sub-tests. Always confirm the current standard before relying on combined results.

Which profession version of OET should I book?

Book the version that matches your profession: Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy or Physiotherapy. Using another profession version can make your preparation and evidence unsuitable.

Can Dr Hesham help with Australia OET preparation?

Yes. Support can focus on your profession, weak sub-tests, writing corrections, speaking role-plays and a realistic timeline before your test date.
